What
to Toss? |
|
|
For today's bride,
the dilemma of what to toss is becoming all too
familiar. Traditionally, rice and birdseed have
been used to shower the departing newlyweds.
However, many reception sites and churches now
ban their use due to concerns about rice being
slippery and birdseed causing wild grasses to
grow. There is also concern that rice may be
harmful to birds, but this has not yet been
proven.
Bubbles have become a popular alternative as
well as butterfly or dove releases. Brides will
want to be sure that any bubbles purchased are
fabric-safe because some solutions may stain
fabrics.
There is mixed opinion concerning butterfly
releases. While some think it is a beautiful
addition to the wedding day, the North American
Butterfly Association does not recommend this
practice. Brides may want to visit their site at
www.naba.org
before making this decision.
Potpourri has been another choice for tossing.
However it, too, may cause stains in fabric or
carpeting.
Other popular choices are ringing bells, dove
releases and tossing rose petals. Concerning
rose petals, however, the bride still needs to
be careful. Fresh rose petals can be slippery
and may stain carpeting, table linens and gowns.
For this reason, freeze-dried rose petals are
recommended over fresh for tossing at weddings.
While they look fresh, the freeze-dried petals
are more carefree and will not wilt nor stain.
Another floral idea is the use of symbolic dried
flower petals and herbs as a wedding toss.
Lavender is an especially good choice, since its
buds are about the size of rice.
In conclusion, times have changed the
traditional way the wedding day is ended, due to
environmental and other concerns. While the
bride may be limited in some choices, new ideas
and traditions are available that will add charm
and beauty to her wedding day. |
