Wedding Cake FAQs

Submit a Question
Q.   Should my cake be white?--Mt. Pleasant, SC
A.   Even though white is still the number one color, keep your color scheme in mind.  Your cake should complement the bridal party/theme.

Q.  When is the cake cut and how is it done?--Ft. Mill, SC
A.  It is usually between the speeches and the couple's first dance following the receptions main meal.  You both cut with right hands overlapping into the center of the bottom layer.  Then link arms and sip your champagne and follow with a sweet kiss.  That is a real crowd pleaser.  The cake should then be taken away to be cut and served to guests.

Q.  What kind of special touches can I add to my cake?  --Sumter, SC
A.  You could add the detail on your gown (beading or embroidery)  Ask your cake designer if they can recreate it by giving them a picture or even a small sample.

Q.  What is traditionally meant to be on the bridal table with the cake?--Charleston, SC
A.  Usually the cake is in the front of the bridal table with an engraved knife, cake server and champagne flutes for the toast.  For decoration, you can layer pastel colored tulle and lay the bridesmaids bouquets around the table.  Traditionally, sugared almonds are on the table too.

Q.  What should I tell my cake decorator when I first talk to them? --Myrtle Beach, SC
A.  Always let the cake decorator know 1-the approximate number of guests the cake will be feeding, 2-if you will be keeping the top tier, 3-ideas of what you want your cake to look like.  Bring some magazine clippings.  Don't forget to do some taste testing!!!!

Q.  Do we really have to have a Groom's Cake?--Barnwell, SC
A.  No---it is not necessary but it is a nice touch.  The Groom's Cake can be served as the dessert at the Rehearsal Dinner or it can be at your reception--that way, your guests can choose.  The Groom's Cake is typically chocolate--but that is not written in stone.

Q.  What shape does my wedding cake have to be?--Hartsville, SC
A.  Traditionally, it is either round or square.  Today, many shapes are available.  Talk to your cake decorator-give her some of your ideas.  Many bakers offer heart shape, oval and many others.  The round and square are just easier to cut and will serve more.

Q.  I have been told to save the top layer of my wedding cake.  Is that true?--Florence, SC
A.  You can.  (I did)  You can just wrap it really good in tin foil, then put it in a freezer bag.  Ours froze nicely.  We thawed it out and it was alright for year old cake.  But it was a nice touch...and we can at least say we did it.  I have heard of couples eating it on their one month anniversary.  You decide.

Q.  Do you have any ideas for a cake topper?  I hate the little bride and groom figurines.--Charleston, SC
A.  Me, too!!!  Our florist made a little cake topper of spray roses...it fit nicely on top.  You can also use silk flowers.   Many bakers are using candied flowers, sugared fruit.

Q.  What does the cutting of the cake symbolize?--Ninety Six, SC
A.  The cutting of the cake and then both feeding each other symbolizes how a couple will feed and nourish their relationship for the rest of their lives.

Q.  When should I order our wedding cake? --Columbia, SC
A.  At least 3 to 4 months before the wedding.  Good bakers get booked up very fast so at least book your baker and then finalize details later.

Q.  What should be included in my service contract with the baker?--Charleston, SC
A.  You should receive a copy of your order and contract.  It should include this information:  Cake type (lemon, pound, etc..) and style; number of layers; types of filling for each layer; frosting type; description of decorations on each layer; cake topper; date, time and location of delivery, total price including delivery and set-up charges.

Q.  Can I serve the Groom's Cake at our Rehearsal Dinner.  I have been to weddings where it is at the Reception.  I don't think I like that.  What is the best thing to do?--Rock Hill, SC
A.  You can serve it as the dessert at your Rehearsal Dinner.  I also have been to weddings where the Groom's Cake was there.  It is really up to you but I think that the Groom's Cake is suppose to be at the Rehearsal Dinner.
